Kompilacja The Singles 81>98 ukazała się w 2001 roku nakładem Sony Music jako trzypłytowy box zawierający twórczość singlową grupy z lat 1981–1998. Wydawnictwo łączy dwa odrębne albumy – The Singles 81>85 i The Singles 86>98 – oferując łącznie 38 utworów. Kolekcja obejmuje całą erę, w której zespół stopniowo przechodził od wczesnych syntezatorowych kompozycji jak Just Can't Get Enough do monumentalnych hitów Personal Jesus i Enjoy the Silence. Box dokumentuje ewolucję brzmienia Depeche Mode od eksperymentów new wave'owych po coraz bardziej wyrafinowany syntezatorowy rock.
W czasie wydania tej kompilacji grupę tworzyli Dave Gahan, Martin L. Gore, Andrew Fletcher i Vince Clarke.
