Album ReLoad w formacie 3 CD ukazał się w listopadzie 1997 roku nakładem wytwórni Blackened. To siódmy album studyjny i kontynuacja albumu Load z 1996 roku — początkowo Metallica rozważała wydanie podwójnego albumu, ale za radą producenta Boba Rocka podzieliła materiał na dwa osobne tytuły. ReLoad zawiera 42 utwory, w tym oryginalne nagrania i wersje demo z okresu komponowania albumu Load. Album zadebiutował na 1. miejscu w USA (436 000 sprzedanych egzemplarzy w pierwszym tygodniu), a na świecie sprzedano ponad 9,5 miliona egzemplarzy. Wśród wyróżniających się utworów są Fuel, The Memory Remains (z gościnnym udziałem wokalistki Marianne Faithfull) oraz The Unforgiven II, kontynuacja utworu z Black Albumu. Muzycznie Metallica poruszała się na pograniczu heavy metalu, rocka alternatywnego i wpływów bluesowych, co przyciągnęło szerszą publiczność. Na albumie po raz pierwszy i jedyny w dyskografii zespołu wystąpiła gościnnie wokalistka.
Skład tworzyli James Hetfield (gitara, główny wokal), Lars Ulrich (perkusja), Kirk Hammett (chórki, gitara) oraz Jason Newsted (chórki, gitara basowa). Dla Newsteda był to ostatni album studyjny nagrany z Metallicą.
