Amerykańska alternatywna grupa rockowa R.E.M. z Athens w stanie Georgia należała do pionierów swojego gatunku, którzy przebili się do świadomości szerokiej publiczności. Po sukcesie albumu Out of Time (1991) weszli do studia praktycznie bez przerwy, by nagrać kolejny album.
Album Automatic for the People ukazał się w październiku 1992 roku nakładem wytwórni Warner Bros. Records i stał się ósmym studyjnym krążkiem zespołu. Początkowo zamierzali nagrać płytę o twardszym brzmieniu, lecz w trakcie prac zmienili kierunek na cichsze, introspektywne kompozycje dotykające tematyki śmiertelności i egzystencji. Zawiera hity Drive, Everybody Hurts czy Man on the Moon, które do dziś należą do najbardziej znanych utworów grupy. Na całym świecie album sprzedał się w nakładzie około 15 milionów egzemplarzy i osiągnął drugie miejsce na listach przebojów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. To jubileuszowe 25. wydanie deluxe oferuje 79 nagrań na 4 płytach Blu-ray wraz z 60-stronicową książeczką i zawiera zremasterowany oryginalny album, nagrania koncertowe oraz miks Dolby Atmos.
W czasie wydania albumu zespół tworzyli wokalista Michael Stipe, gitarzysta Peter Buck, basista i klawiszowiec Mike Mills oraz perkusista Bill Berry.
