Przed pojawieniem się płyty Thriller Michaela Jacksona był to najlepiej sprzedający się album w historii przemysłu muzycznego; na świecie sprzedano ponad 40 milionów egzemplarzy. W Stanach Zjednoczonych soundtrack utrzymywał się na szczycie zestawień przez 24 tygodnie, w Wielkiej Brytanii przez 18 tygodni.
Album zaprezentował fenomen muzyki disco po obu stronach Atlantyku i stał się międzynarodową sensacją. Obok Bee Gees (utwory Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever, More Than A Woman) znalazły się na nim nagrania innych wykonawców, m.in.
