The Verve była brytyjską grupą rockową, która należała do najważniejszych przedstawicieli britpopu lat 90. Ich spektrum muzyczne obejmowało sferyczne pejzaże dźwiękowe i psychodeliczny shoegaze, poprzez rock 'n' roll, aż po rozbudowane aranżacje britpopowych hymnów.
Trzeci album studyjny Urban Hymns ukazał się 29 września 1997 nakładem wytwórni Virgin i stał się najbardziej udanym albumem grupy – utrzymywał się na pierwszym miejscu na brytyjskiej liście przebojów przez dwanaście tygodni między październikiem 1997 a lutym 1998 i zdobył ponad 25 platynowych certyfikatów na całym świecie, w tym w USA. To dwupłytowe wydanie na CD zawiera 27 utworów, w tym światowej sławy Bitter Sweet Symphony, kolejne single The Drugs Don't Work, Lucky Man i Sonnet, a także koncertowe nagrania z występu w Haigh Hall. Album powstał w Olympic Studios w Londynie pod kierunkiem producenta Martina „Youtha” Glovera i inżyniera dźwięku Chrisa Pottera.
W czasie nagrywania skład The Verve tworzyli Richard Ashcroft (wokal, lider), Nick McCabe (gitara), Simon Jones (gitara basowa), Peter Salisbury (perkusja) i Simon Tong (gitara).
