Dream Theater to amerykański progresywnometalowy zespół, zaliczany do najważniejszych i najbardziej wpływowych formacji tego gatunku. Od powstania w 1985 roku grupa słynie z technicznej wirtuozerii, skomplikowanych kompozycji oraz fuzji elementów heavy metalu, rocka progresywnego i fusion.
Album Distance Over Time ukazał się 22 lutego 2019 roku nakładem wytwórni Inside Out Music jako czternasta studyjna płyta zespołu. To siedmiopłytowy box na Blu-ray zawierający 72 nagrania — poza dziewięcioma utworami z albumu oferuje ich instrumentalne miksy oraz wersje animowane. Zespół dążył do stworzenia cięższego, bardziej surowego materiału niż na poprzednim albumie The Astonishing z 2016 roku. Single Untethered Angel, Fall Into the Light i Paralyzed ukazywały się stopniowo przed oficjalną premierą, a do dwóch pierwszych powstały teledyski. Distance Over Time okazał się jak dotąd najbardziej udanym albumem Dream Theater na listach przebojów — zajął pierwsze miejsce w Niemczech i Szwajcarii oraz znalazł się w pierwszej dziesiątce w łącznie 19 krajach.
W czasie wydania albumu skład Dream Theater tworzyli John Petrucci (gitara, chórki), James LaBrie (wokal), John Myung (gitara basowa, Chapman stick), Jordan Rudess (instrumenty klawiszowe, continuum, lap steel guitar) oraz Mike Mangini (perkusja).
