Grateful Dead to amerykańska grupa rockowa znana z eklektycznego stylu łączącego elementy rocka, folku, bluesa, jazzu, country i psychodelii. Zespół zasłynął z improwizowanych koncertów na żywo oraz oddanej bazy fanów znanej jako „Deadheads”.
Album Grateful Dead ukazał się 24 września 1971 roku nakładem wytwórni Warner Bros. Records jako ich drugi album koncertowy na podwójnym winylu. Choć został opublikowany bez tytułu, powszechnie znany jest jako „Skull and Roses”. Stał się pierwszym albumem grupy nagrodzonym złotą płytą przez RIAA i do czasu wydania kompilacji Skeletons from the Closet pozostawał ich bestsellerem. To jubileuszowe wydanie oferuje 11 utworów nagranych na żywo w Nowym Jorku i San Francisco, zremasterowanych na 180-gramowym winylu, w tym Bertha, Playing in the Band czy osiemnastominutową The Other One.
W czasie wydania albumu skład Grateful Dead tworzyli Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart i Ron „Pigpen” McKernan.
