Grateful Dead to amerykańska grupa rockowa założona w 1965 roku w Kalifornii, znana z eklektycznego stylu łączącego elementy rocka, folku, bluegrassu, bluesa, country, jazzu i psychodelii. Zasłynęła długimi improwizacjami podczas koncertów oraz oddaną bazą fanów, w 2007 roku otrzymała Grammy za całokształt twórczości.
Workingman's Dead, czwarty album studyjny grupy, ukazał się w czerwcu 1970 roku nakładem wytwórni Warner Bros. Records i został uznany przez magazyn Rolling Stone za najlepszą płytę roku. Album wraz ze swoim następcą American Beauty odszedł od psychodelicznych eksperymentów w stronę północnoamerykańskiego songwritingu folkrockowego Jerry'ego Garcii i Roberta Huntera. Ta rozszerzona reedycja z 2020 roku, wydana przez wytwórnię Rhino z okazji pięćdziesiątej rocznicy oryginalnego albumu, zawiera nowo zremasterowane nagranie wszystkich 8 studyjnych utworów oraz dodatkowo na drugim i trzecim CD kompletny zapis koncertu z 21 lutego 1971 roku w Capitol Theatre w Port Chester w stanie Nowy Jork, łącznie 32 utwory. Do usłyszenia są między innymi Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones, Cumberland Blues oraz koncertowe wersje Me and Bobby McGee, Ripple i Johnny B. Goode.
W czasie wydania albumu skład tworzyli Ron „Pigpen” McKernan, Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Tom Constanten, Bruce Hornsby, Robert Hunter i Rob Wasserman.
