Album The Broadsword and The Beast ukazał się w kwietniu 1982 roku nakładem wytwórni Chrysalis na winylu. To czternasty album studyjny zespołu, który łączy folkowy styl poprzedniej dekady z dominującym brzmieniem syntezatorowym lat 80. – akustyczne instrumenty uzupełniają tu elektroniczne pejzaże dźwiękowe. Nagranie zawiera dziesięć utworów, do najbardziej wyróżniających się należą Beastie, Broadsword czy Fallen on Hard Times. Płyta została nagrana zimą 1981 roku, a po raz pierwszy w historii zespołu produkcją zajął się zewnętrzny producent Paul Samwell-Smith.
W momencie wydania albumu skład Jethro Tull tworzyli Ian Anderson (gitara akustyczna, flet, harmonijka, śpiew, mandolina), Martin Barre (gitara akustyczna i elektryczna, flet prosty), Dave Pegg (gitara basowa, mandolina), Gerry Conway (perkusja), Peter-John Vettese (instrumenty klawiszowe), Paul Burgess (perkusja), Scott Hammond oraz Tony Williams (gitara basowa).
