The Pretenders to brytyjsko-amerykańska grupa rockowa założona w 1978 roku w Hereford przez inicjatorkę i autorkę większości piosenek Chrissie Hynde. Po śmierci dwóch członków zespołu związanych z narkotykami w latach 80., grupa przeszła liczne zmiany personalne, a Hynde pozostała jedynym stałym członkiem.
Album Pretenders II ukazał się w sierpniu 1981 roku nakładem wytwórni Sire Records jako drugi studyjny album grupy i osiągnął 7. miejsce na brytyjskiej liście przebojów oraz 10. pozycję w amerykańskim Billboard 200. To trzypłytowe rozszerzone wydanie przygotowała sama Chrissie Hynde i obejmuje oryginalne nagranie z 1981 roku z utworami Message of Love, Talk of the Town czy Day After Day, wersje demo oraz nagrania koncertowe z występu w nowojorskim Central Parku z sierpnia 1980 roku. To ostatni album w oryginalnym składzie, zanim w następnym roku zespół dotknęła śmierć gitarzysty Jamesa Honeymana-Scotta.
W czasie wydania albumu skład The Pretenders tworzyli Chrissie Hynde (wokal, gitara), James Honeyman-Scott (gitara, instrumenty klawiszowe, wokale wspierające), Pete Farndon (gitara basowa, wokale wspierające), Martin Chambers (perkusja), Carwyn Ellis i Nick Wilkinson.
