Prince był amerykańskim wokalistą, kompozytorem, multiinstrumentalistą i producentem muzycznym. Jego twórczość obejmowała szeroki wachlarz stylów — funk, soul, R&B, rock, pop, new wave i jazz. Był pionierem tzw. minneapolisskiego brzmienia, a na większości swoich nagrań grał wszystkie instrumenty samodzielnie.
Kompilacja The Very Best of Prince ukazała się w 2001 roku nakładem wytwórni Warner Bros. Records i zawiera 17 utworów, z których wszystkie ukazały się jako single z jego albumów studyjnych w latach 1979–1991. Album osiągnął pośmiertnie pierwsze miejsce na amerykańskiej liście Billboard (maj 2016) i uzyskał certyfikat platyny za sprzedaż około 2,9 miliona egzemplarzy w USA.
