R.E.M. to amerykańska grupa rockowa założona w 1980 roku w Athens w stanie Georgia, należąca do pionierów rocka alternatywnego. Charakterystycznym brzmieniem, opartym na gitarowym stylu Petera Bucka pełnym arpeggii oraz zawoalowanym wokalu Stipe'a, zbudowała w latach osiemdziesiątych kultową pozycję na scenie alternatywnej, zanim w 1987 roku hitem The One I Love wkroczyła do mainstreamu.
Album Monster ukazał się we wrześniu 1994 roku nakładem Warner Bros. Records jako dziewiąty album studyjny grupy. Po dwóch poprzednich albumach Out of Time i Automatic for the People stanowi świadomy zwrot w kierunku głośniejszego, zniekształconego gitarowego rocka z wpływami glam-rocku i grunge. Płyta zajęła pierwsze miejsce na listach przebojów na całym świecie i przyniosła hity takie jak What's the Frequency, Kenneth?, Strange Currencies i Bang and Blame. To remasterowane wydanie na Blu-ray od wytwórni Craft Recordings zawiera 114 nagrań, w tym obszerny materiał bonusowy.
W czasie wydania albumu R.E.M. tworzyli czterej członkowie-założyciele: Michael Stipe (wokal), Peter Buck (gitara), Mike Mills (gitara basowa, instrumenty klawiszowe, wokale towarzyszące) i Bill Berry (perkusja).
