Yankee Hotel Foxtrot ukazał się w kwietniu 2002 roku na CD nakładem wytwórni Nonesuch. To czwarty album studyjny grupy, który powstawał pod koniec 2000 roku w turbulentnych okolicznościach — konflikty w zespole, zmiana perkusisty i spory o ostateczny kształt utworów towarzyszyły nagrywaniu i postprodukcji. Płyta została ostatecznie ukończona na początku 2001 roku, lecz pierwotna wytwórnia odmówiła jej wydania, więc Wilco udostępnili ją na własnej stronie jeszcze przed oficjalną premierą. Album zawiera 11 utworów o łącznej długości 52 minut; do najbardziej znanych należą I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Jesus, Etc. i Heavy Metal Drummer. Pod względem brzmienia płyta zmierza w stronę atmosferycznego art rocka i eksperymentu, co było wówczas dla zespołu nową drogą.
W nagraniu udział wzięli Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, perkusista Glenn Kotche (jego pierwszy album z Wilco), gitarzysta Leroy Bach oraz klawiszowiec Mikael Jorgensen.
