Dream Theater to amerykańska progresywnometalowa grupa, założona w 1985 roku, która należy do najważniejszych przedstawicieli tego gatunku. Łączy heavymetalowe riffy, techniczną wirtuozerię i skomplikowane struktury kompozycyjne typowe dla rocka progresywnego.
Album Awake Demos 1994 ukazał się w 2006 roku nakładem wytwórni Inside Out Music i zawiera 11 demonagrań. Stanowi unikalny wgląd w proces twórczy zespołu w okresie powstawania ich trzeciego albumu studyjnego Awake. Wśród nagrań znaleźć można dłuższe kompozycje progresywne, takie jak Scarred (11:16), The Mirror (10:13) czy Voices (9:31), a także krótsze utwory, takie jak The Silent Man czy Lie.
W momencie wydania tych demonagrań grupę tworzyli John Petrucci (gitara, wokal wspierający), James LaBrie (wokal prowadzący), John Myung (gitara basowa, Chapman stick), Mike Portnoy (perkusja, instrumenty perkusyjne, wokal wspierający), Jordan Rudess (instrumenty klawiszowe, continuum, gitara lap steel) oraz Steve Stone.
