Green Day to amerykański punkrockowy zespół założony w 1986 roku, w skład którego wchodzą wokalista i gitarzysta Billie Joe Armstrong, basista Mike Dirnt oraz perkusista Tré Cool. Grupa należy do najbardziej utytułowanych formacji rockowych swojego pokolenia.
American Idiot ukazał się we wrześniu 2004 roku nakładem wytwórni Reprise Records jako siódmy album studyjny, określany przez zespół jako „punk rock opera”. Album koncepcyjny opowiada historię Jesusa of Suburbia, młodego amerykańskiego antybohatera z niższej klasy średniej, i wyraża rozczarowanie pokolenia naznaczonego wydarzeniami takimi jak 11 września i wojna w Iraku. Album wyprodukował Rob Cavallo, nagrywano go w kalifornijskich studiach Ocean Way Recording oraz Studio 880. Płyta stała się komercyjnie największym sukcesem Green Day – sprzedano ją w ponad 14 milionach egzemplarzy na całym świecie, zajęła pierwsze miejsca na listach przebojów w 19 krajach i przyniosła zespołowi nagrodę Grammy.
